Stamp Game app subtraction problem with borrowing
Subtraction Problem with borrowing

Adding is the method of putting numbers together.

With the MT Stamp Game app students develop the mental concept of adding. They create addends on the iPad screen with virtual stamps, just as they can with the Montessori physical material, and then they drag addends together. The action of putting the stamps together develops the understanding of addition.

The Stamp Game app also creates a visual representation of carrying, which Montessori calls "exchanging". Using this app a student can see carrying and understand it with one movement of their finger. How? Well, for example, as they drag a group of 10 green unit stamps to the tens place value column, the app converts it to 1 blue ten stamp. We created a unique visual of carrying that reinforces the concept. No other app has this.

Subtraction, as well, can be set to be a static or dynamic experience for students with the MT Stamp Game app. Students can experience borrowing with just a drag of the finger, showing one stamp from a larger place value transforming into 10 stamps of the smaller place value. And with a tap they can notate the borrowing in the arithmetic problem. (This is also present for carrying in addition.)

The MT Stamp Game app is an extension that complements Montessori work for Montessori students and introduces other students to an opportunity to learn and practice math in a way they have never done before.

Our goal is to assist students to gradually and easily bridge their concrete thinking to abstract thinking.

History of the stamp game

Traditional Stamp Game

Doctor Montessori originally created the stamp game using postage stamps. Then the postage stamps were changed to mosaic tiles and then eventually the current wooden tiles. Our virtual material uses the same Montessori Logic.

We developed this app for all students to lean and experience addition and subtraction the Montessori way. Montessori students will love the practice they can get with the Stamp Game for the iPad.
